The artist
Ima's pottery is a lovely mix of Tuscan tradition and creativity. The shapes and proportions of their pottery are often unusual, just like the vivid colors they have chosen for our collections. All Ima's pottery is entirely handcrafted in their studio in Montelupo Fiorentino. Mostly made of white clay, each piece is molded by experienced wheel-throwers and hand painted by wonderful master ceramicists. Only then the piece has the right to sit in Ima's large showroom that hosts an impressive collection of beautiful Tuscan pottery.
Montelupo Fiorentino is a charming medieval hilltop town located just on the outskirts of Florence. It became a popular center for pottery making in the Middle Ages. Still, the craft flourished in the 16th century during the Italian Renaissance when Florentine merchants stopped in Montelupo to load their vessels with richly decorated majolicas and sailed on the Arno river and on to European cities, where eager collectors were waiting.
Montelupo is still an important center for handcrafted Tuscan pottery, with artisans' studios lining the streets downtown and dotting its surrounding countryside, together with tall cypresses and old mansions.
