Wall Plate The Wise Man
By Francesca Niccacci
Descriptions & details
Istoriato is a style of decoration on Italian Renaissance pottery that features a painted scene, usually of a mythical, historical, or biblical subject, executed with a realism quite unlike any previous pottery decoration.
The subject on this wall plate is a detail from the frescoes painted by Benozzo Gozzoli in the Magi Chapel of Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence (1459-1461).
Allegedly, the wise man is a portrait of Lorenzo il Magnifico - The Magnificent aka Lorenzo de' Medici - ruler of the Florentine Republic and a most powerful and enthusiastic patron of the Italian Renaissance arts.
The wall plate comes ready to hang.
