Last year strolling in the main street in Gubbio, Manuela and I were attracted by some contemporary ceramic works on display in the window of a gallery. We visited the gallery and asked some info about one of the artists, named Lucia Angeloni.

Actually, the name rang a bell, as well as the style. We gave the matter some thought and we remembered that a few years before Giampietro Rampini had shown us a very interesting Brocca dei Ceri made by Lucia. He had told us: “If you’re looking for some good ceramic art you girls  should meet her because she definitely is one of the best artists I know of and I can introduce you to her”. At the time we were still working hard on setting up thatsArte.com and we did not have any time for our personal collection.

Anyway – some time after our blast in the gallery, we went back to Gubbio for Alan Caiger-Smith’s solo exhibition of tin glazed pottery. A small selection of Rampini’s and Angeloni’s works was part of the exhibition and we loved them.

Since then I’ve been longing to meet Lucia and own a piece of hers. A few weeks ago my Mum offered me the opportunity, asking the magic question “any special wish for your birthday gift?”. I definitely had one.

I called Manuela and shared my plan with her. Then we asked Rampinin to introduce us to Lucia …

We met Lucia in the main square in Gubbio. She is a good looking young lady, transmitting a positive energy, yet having a very relaxed and relaxing attitude.

She looked happy to talk about her art, her inspiration, the challenges of pottery making, the rough side of being an artist, a teacher and a woman with a family to take care of . We had a wonderful time with her.

She has been making pottery since her childhood. Her mother worked in Aldo Ajo’s studio and Lucia loved to mold clay beside her Mum. Ajo’, one of the most important artists of the 20th century, sensed the talents hidden in little girl. He supported her development, keeping a close eye on her steady progress.

As Lucia talked and described her works, from her beginnings to her latest pottery, I was very much impressed by four key facts that run, as a fil rouge, throughout all her pieces:

• # the tension between tradition and innovation
• # the wealth of her inner life that reflects in the themes she has been
  exploring as an artist
• # her “female” sensibility
• # her technical skills

Lucia’s works are contemporary art, without exception. Their shapes, colors, designs and meaning unanimously stand for Art produced at this present point in time. Yet, a second glance will always reveal the artist’s tribute to tradition: a spiral evoking the designs painted by Mastro Giorgio on the back of his bowls, a golden salamander reminding the symbolic animal sculpted on the huge town bell of Gubbio, the revival of a technique used by the Etruscans, a plastic detail inspired by Ajo’s art.

I personally think she has found a stupendously simple way to show that Art is the flow of emotions and an art work is always the end result of a process that started a long time before the artist was born… Lucia’s “quotations” are to me a great ways to say thank you to her past fellow artists, who showed her the way.

In the few hours (or were them minutes?) we spent together, I was under the spell of Lucia’s words, flowing from her immensely rich inner life, that she projects in all her works.
You can tell as she speaks of her latest works that she simply LOVES what she does and that she can’t wait to put her hands on wet clay, to translate into something real the ideas that are stuffing her head.

While she described her works it became apparent that she has been exploring many themes in her artistic life: myths, fairy tales, the abstract perfection of numbers. Throughout all her works, however, you can see the wisdom of the ancestral Woman, who knows by instinct that nothing comes easily. On the contrary life is made of having the opposites meet, stitching together the loose ends, hiding the dark sides to make the bright ones stand out…

The golden stitches that Lucia uses in her works mean a lot to me, as a woman.
Despite the solid technical knowledge Lucia had acquired “on the job”, she avowed that she’s been struggling for many years to achieve the results she had on her mind. “Clay is alive and it responds to your manipulations in its own peculiar way. You never get exactly what you are hoping for, unless you proceed by trial and error until you get where you want to”.

Her works are very complicated, in terms of sheer technique. She molds the clay and she designs it. After the first firing she protects the design with a special resin, paints the piece and gets it kiln fired again. Then more glazes are applied that require a third and final firing, such as gold, mother of pearl and metal oxides.
A painstaking process that Lucia makes for each work, with awesome results.

After a massive use of bright colors, like orange and red, Lucia is using a very distinctive dark pink for her latest works. She says “Color to me is like sound to a musician. I’ve been speaking loud for a long time, because I felt like it. Now I need a softer tune to express my feelings.”

It was very hard to choose one of Lucia’s works for my collection. I asked Manuela and Lucia to help me, because I wanted to take home with me something that reminded me the time the three of us had spent together. I’m attaching an poor picture of my birthday gift. Lucia Angeloni – Cucendo Presente e Passato

L’anno scorso, passeggiando per la via principale di Gubbio, Manuela ed io rimanemmo attratte da alcune creazioni in ceramica contemporanea esposte nella vetrina di una galleria d’arte. Visitammo la galleria e chiedemmo informazioni su alcune opere che ci avevano attratto, e che scoprimmo essere di una artista chiamata Lucia Angeloni.

Il nome non ci suonò affatto nuovo, cosi come lo stile ci era molto familiare. Ripensandoci bene, ci ricordammo che alcuni anni prima Giampietro Rampini ci aveva mostrato una Brocca dei Ceri molto interessante creata proprio da Lucia. Giampietro ci disse: “Ragazze, se siete interessate alla vera arte ceramica dovreste incontrare Lucia, poiché lei è certamente tra i migliori artisti che io conosca – se volete ve la posso presentare”. In quel momento stavamo ancora lavorando duramente per avviare thatsarte.com e non avevamo tempo da dedicare alla nostra collezione personale. Rinunciammo a malincuore, facendoci però promettere da Giampietro che la sua offerta sarebbe sempre stata rinnovabile per il futuro.

In ogni caso – passato po’ di tempo dalla nostra incursione nella galleria, tornammo a Gubbio per la mostra dedicata alle opere di ceramica a lustro di Alan Caiger-Smith. Accanto alle opere dell’artista inglese c’era anche una piccola ma affascinante selezione di creazioni a lustro di Rampini e Angeloni, di cui naturalmente ci innamorammo.
Da quel momento in poi ho iniziato a morir dalla voglia di incontrare Lucia e possedere una delle sue opere. Alcune settimane fa mia madre me ne offrì l’occasione formulando la magica domanda “Nessun desiderio speciale per il tuo regalo di compleanno?” Decisamente ne avevo uno!
Telefonai subito Manuela e condivisi con lei il mio piano. Poi chiamammo Giampietro per ricordargli la sua promessa…

Incontrammo Lucia nella piazza principale di Gubbio. Lucia è una affascinante giovane donna, capace di trasmettere energia positiva, con un’attitudine rilassata e altrettanto rilassante per chi l’ascolta.

Era entusiasta di parlarci della sua arte, delle sfide da affrontare nel creare opere in ceramica, del bello e del brutto di essere contemporaneamente un’artista, un’insegnate e una donna con una famiglia da seguire. Il tempo passato con lei è stato per noi davvero unico.

Lucia si è dedicata alla ceramica fin da quando era bambina. Sua madre lavorava nello studio di Aldo Ajò e Lucia amava modellare l’argilla seduta accanto alla sua mamma. Ajò, uno dei più importanti artisti del 20 sec., intuì il talento che si celava nella piccola bambina e così supportò e vigilò costantemente sui suoi progressi e la sua crescita come artista.

Mentre Lucia parlava e descriveva l’evolversi e il senso del suo lavoro, dalle primissime fino alle ultime opere, io ero davvero impressionata da quattro fattori chiave che, come un “fil rouge”, mi sembrava di scorgere in tutti suoi pezzi:

• # la tensione tra tradizione ed innovazione
• # la ricchezza della sua vita interiore che si ritrova nei vari temi da lei esplorati come artista
• # la sua sensibilità “femminile”
• # le sue indubbie capacità tecniche

Le creazioni di Lucia sono senza dubbio opere d’arte contemporanea. Le loro forme, i colori, il design convergono in una forma di Arte che appartiene al nostro presente.
Tuttavia un’attenta seconda occhiata rivelerà sempre il tributo dell’artista alla tradizione: una spirale che rievoca i disegni dipinti da Mastro Giorgio sul retro delle sue ciotole, una salamandra dorata a ricordare l’animale simbolico (animale che vive nel fuoco e che il fuoco non può consumare  e che rappresenta, per questa sua capacità, la pietra incandescente dei Filosofi che non si esaurisce mai ) scolpito sul campanone di Gubbio, il recupero di tecniche usate dagli Etruschi, un dettaglio plastico ispirato dall’arte di Ajò.

Personalmente ritengo che Lucia abbia trovato uno modo meravigliosamente semplice di mostrare come l’Arte sia un flusso di emozioni e un’opera d’arte  il risultato finale di un processo iniziato molto tempo prima che l’artista nascesse… …le “citazioni” di Lucia sono secondo me un modo magnifico per ringraziare  gli artisti che l’hanno preceduta, che le hanno mostrato la strada.

Nelle poche ore trascorse con Lucia (o erano minuti?), io ero sotto l’incantesimo delle sue parole, generate dalla sua immensamente ricca vita interiore e proiettate in tutte le sue opere.

Da come parla delle sue ultime creazioni si può facilmente capire quanto  Lucia AMI ciò che fa e quanto sia desiderosa di immergere le sue mani nell’umida argilla per poter trasformare tutte le idee che ruotano nella sua testa in qualcosa  di reale.

Mentre Lucia parla delle sue opere si evidenzia come durante il suo percorso artistico abbia esplorato diversi temi: miti, favole, l’astratta perfezione dei numeri.
Costantemente però, in tutte le sue creazioni, si ritrova la saggezza della donna ancestrale, che sa per istinto che niente succede facilmente. Al contrario, la vita è fatta di opposti che s’incontrano, cucendo insieme le parti libere, nascondendo i lati oscuri per far risaltare quelli più brillanti…

Le cuciture dorate usate da Lucia nelle sue creazioni, assumono per me, come donna, un grandissimo significato.
Nonostante la solida conoscenza tecnica acquisita “sul lavoro”, Lucia dichiara che ha dovuto faticare molti anni prima di poter raggiungere i risultati che aveva in mente. “L’argilla è viva e risponde a modo suo alle tue manipolazioni. Non otterrai mai esattamente quello che speri, a meno di non procedere facendo prove su prove fino a quando finalmente raggiungi ciò che desideri”.

In termini di pura tecnica, la realizzazione delle opere di Lucia è molto complessa. Prima lavora l’argilla e la disegna. Dopo il primo fuoco protegge il disegno con una resina speciale, dipinge il pezzo e lo rimette nel forno per il secondo fuoco. Infine ancora una smaltatura è necessaria prima del terzo fuoco, per poter ottenere l’oro, la madreperla e il metallo ossido. Un faticoso processo che Lucia segue per ogni sua creazione, con magnifici risultati.

Dopo un cospicuo uso di colori brillanti quali l’arancione ed il rosso, Lucia sta ora usando, per le sue ultime opere, un caratteristico rosa scuro. Dice: “I colori per me sono come il suono per un musicista. Per lungo tempo ho parlato a voce alta perché era così che sentivo il bisogno di esprimermi. Ora invece è con un tono più pacato che desidero trasmettere le mie emozioni”.

E’ stato davvero difficile scegliere una delle opere di Lucia per la mia collezione: ogni pezzo era davvero unico e speciale. Ho chiesto aiuto a Manuela e Lucia, perché volevo portarmi a casa qualcosa che mi ricordasse del tempo che noi tre avevamo trascorso insieme.
