The enchanting Gubbio Christmas tree
Every year, a breathtaking Christmas tree rises nearly half a mile up the slopes of Mount Ingino, just outside Gubbio in Italy’s stunning Umbria region.
It takes a dedicated team of local volunteers to arrange several miles of electrical cabling and thousands of colorful lights across the mountain’s rugged terrain, creating a dazzling light display shaped like a giant Christmas tree.
This spectacular sight reaches an impressive height of 2,100 feet and spans over 1,000 feet in width, crowned with a shimmering star.
Since 1981, this masterpiece has been illuminated every year on December 7th, with the honor of flipping the switch going to special guests like Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis over the years. In 2017, the tree was even lit remotely from space, thanks to the efforts of the European and Italian Space Agencies! The display continues to dazzle visitors throughout the holiday season, twinkling brightly until the Day of the Epiphany on January 6th.

It is handmade in Gubbio by Rampini, a highly regarded artisan known for their exceptional ceramic creations. This unique art piece is painted using the Lustre technique.
Lustre is a fascinating, centuries-old method that gives the ornament its beautiful iridescent finish. This is achieved by applying metallic glazes, such as silver, copper, or gold, followed by a third kiln firing.
Each ornament is packaged in an elegant gift box, complete with a hanger and its own certificate of authenticity. It truly is a piece to treasure!
