1. Hello,

   I recently aquirred 6 italian ceramic art tiles. Three are marked ICS with the fish logo and three are simply marked italy on the reverse. They are all the same size and the pottery and art work is very similar. I was hoping you could help me with a few questions. Did ICS make tiles that were not marked? Where can I find more information on ICS art tiles? Can you recommend a reference guide? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

   La manifattura vietrese per la produzione di ceramiche artistiche “I.C.S.” (Industria Ceramica Salernitana) viene fondata nel 1927, nei laboratori ceramici della ex ditta “Della Monica” a Marina di Vietri, dall’imprenditore amburghese Max Melamerson che ne fa un centro di produzione di ceramiche artistiche frequentato dai maggiori talenti di area tedesca, e non solo, della ceramica moderna, la cosidetta “colonia tedesca di Vietri”, probabilmente con la collaborazione tecnica di Gunter Studemann, già proprietario della “Fontana Limite”.
   Da Firenze chiama Barbara Margarethe Thewalt, dalla Russia giunge la pittrice Liesel Oppel, assume lo scultore in ceramica Lothar Eglive, la modellatrice Hilde Ramberlieg, le pittrici Amos Marianne ed Elisabeth Schveizer, il torniante Piesche, Irene Kowaliska e il ceramista Richard Dolker come direttore artistico.
   Tra gli italiani lavorano presso la manifattura, tra gli altri, Guido Gambone, Vincenzo Procida ed il figlio Salvatore , Giovannino Carrano, Francesco Solimene e Giovannino Falcone.
   Negli anni Trenta la produzione è costituita soprattutto da ceramiche d’uso di sapore popolare e naif dai decori fortemente semplificati e generalmente bicolore.
   Nel 1933 alcune ceramiche della manifattura sono esposte alla II mostra Salernitana d’Arte.
   Nel 1935 l’incarico di direttore artistico della manifattura è assegnato a Guido Gambone.
   La manifattura conta numerose presenze alle edizioni della Triennale di Milano.
   Alla fine degli anni Trenta Max Melamerson fonda, sempre a Fontana Limite, presso Vietri, anche la manifattura “M.A.C.S.”
   Alla fine degli anni Trenta tra gli apprendisti che lavorano per la manifattura c’è, appena adolescente, Guido Infante.
   Negli anni successivi Max Melarmerson, in quanto israelita, viene rinchiuso, a causa delle leggi razziali, nel campo di raccolta di Viterbo.
   Alla fine della guerra la gente di Vietri lo ricorda girare per le strade della cittadina nella disperata ricerca della sua collezione di ceramiche.
   Il marchio della manifattura è costituito da un pesce stilizzato e la scritta “I.C.S. Vietri”.
   Recentemente è stato individuato un nuovo marchio raffigurante due scogli “gemelli” affioranti dal mare e l’acronimo “ICS”.
   Entrambi i marchi traggono ispirazione da quelli usati precedentemente da Gunther Studemann per firmare i lavori della sua “Fontana Limite”
