The Brocche dei Ceri are the heroes of the Corsa dei Ceri or Race of the Saints, a spectacular event held in Gubbio every year since the 12th-century. This Brocca is proudly handmade by Giampietro Rampini, an experienced local artisan and one of the race leaders.

Descriptions & details

The Race of the Saints is held in Gubbio on May 15th, the day before St Ubaldo day. Three teams devoted to St Ubaldo, St. Giorgio and St Antonio run along the narrow streets and up on the mountain to the Church of St Ubaldo. Each team, clad respectively in yellow, blue, and black, carries a wooden Cero or candle, a 23 ft tall, 617-lbs heavy pedestal culminating with the statue of the saint they are devoted to.
The team leaders wet the candles with the water in their Brocca, then throw the vessel at the feet of the crowd. Whoever manages to retrieve a shard will be granted good luck for the year to come!
The Race of the Saints is also organized every year in Jessup, Pennsylvania. Many people migrated there from Gubbio at the end of the 19th century and transplanted the tradition. The race rules are similar to the Corsa dei Ceri, and the Brocche are always sent from Gubbio.

The artisan

Ceramiche Rampini has been in the business of making beautiful pottery since 1954. It's a small, family-run studio whose work is rooted in the ceramic tradition of Gubbio, a charming Umbrian village. The Rampinis are the makers of the popular Rinascimento, a lovely design with a secret. It is handpainted using a proprietary method that delivers a textured, en-relief decoration. Ceramiche Rampini is also one of the official producers of the Brocche dei Ceri, the traditional jugs used in the Race of the Saints, a spectacular event held in Gubbio on May 15th, the day before St Ubaldo day.

Gubbio is a lovely medieval Umbrian town, with picture-book pretty steep streets and rosy stone houses. In Roman times, it was a key stop on the east-west trade route crossing the Appennines, thus developing as an important hub for arts and crafts. Its reputation in ceramics production attracted talents from neighboring regions, and eventually, Mastro Giorgio Andreoli settled in Gubbio in 1495. His iridescent luster majolica earned him fame and honors, and it is still a most prized possession for art collectors and museums worldwide.
Gubbio is still a vibrant pottery-making center, with many artisans keeping the traditional production methods alive.
