Around the 10th century it crossed the Mediterranean, influencing Italian and Spanish potters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thatsarte.com\/handmade-italian\/artist\/francesco_fasano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2953\" title=\"Sgraffito pottery: Francesco Fasano at work\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thatsarte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DSC_5663NXframed2.jpg\" alt=\"Sgraffito pottery: Francesco Fasano at work\" width=\"495\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A layer of colored liquid clay, called engobe, is applied on a leather hard pottery piece. When dry the potter decorates the piece, scratching the superficial layer to form a design and revealing the clay color underneath. At this point the piece can be kiln fired for the first time and, if necessary, colored glazes can be applied before a second firing.<\/p>\n<p>In the picture we see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thatsarte.com\/handmade-italian\/artist\/francesco_fasano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Francesco Fasano<\/a> at work in his studio.
