This wall plate depicts the portrait of a lady from a painting by the Italian Renaissance painter Piero del Pollaiolo (1470) housed in the Museum Poldi Pezzoli in Milan. The scroll or white ribbon is marked with the words Art et Amor (Art and Love).
During the Italian Renaissance display plates were intended as engagement or wedding gifts for lovers. They celebrated the ideals of beauty and virtue, often depicting a Bella Donna, a beautiful lady, surrounded by speaking scrolls.
Fascinated by this ancient tradition, Francesca Niccacci pays tribute to it in her own special way, choosing for her portraits the exquisite female beauties from the works of the most famous Italian painters. Francesca is an internationally renowned artist from Deruta. Her work evokes the splendors of Italian Renaissance, that revive on her breathtaking istoriato scenes, portraits and elaborate scrolls.
