The Italian name of this piece is “Saliera” - salt dish. As a highly valued ingredient throughout history, salt was one of the primary movers of national economies and essential to the maintenance of life. That’s why it was always kept in precious containers. Noble families used to set their table with a monumental salt dish on the lord’s right and a smaller one at the other end of the table. During the Renaissance, the salt dish -- made of ceramic, bone china, silver or gold -- became a key decoration piece for formal tables. In the following century, it changed into a spice dish, shaped to also contain pepper and other spices.
