This wall plate depicts the bust of Venus, from the painting “Venus and Mars” (1483) by the Italian Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli housed in the London’s National Gallery.
The scroll or white ribbon surrounding Venus is marked with the words Anima Mea (My Soul).
During the Italian Renaissance display plates were intended as engagement or wedding gifts for lovers. They celebrated the ideals of beauty and virtue, often depicting a Bella Donna, a beautiful lady, surrounded by speaking scrolls.
Fascinated by this ancient tradition, Francesca Niccacci pays tribute to it in her own special way, choosing for her portraits the exquisite female beauties from the works of the most famous Italian painters. Francesca is an internationally renowned artist from Deruta. Her work evokes the splendors of Italian Renaissance, that revive on her breathtaking istoriato scenes, portraits and elaborate scrolls.
