This istoriato wall plate depicts Laocoon, a Trojan priest of Poseidon.
The story goes that he tried to warn his fellow citizens against accepting the Trojan horse from the Greeks, begging them to set fire to the wooden horse, instead. Athena, who supported the Greeks, punished him first by blinding him, then she sent two giant sea snakes to strangle and kill him and his two sons.
Istoriato means that the scene on the plate tells a story. This style of pottery decoration originated during the Italian Renaissance and remained popular throughout the 16th century. The subjects—biblical, historical, and mythological scenes—were executed with a realism quite unlike any previous pottery decoration. They are much sought after collector items.
Francesca Niccacci, the author of this display plate, is an internationally renowned artist from Deruta. Her work evokes the splendors of Italian Renaissance, that revive on her breathtaking istoriato scenes, portraits and elaborate scrolls.
