This Renaissance pattern was inspired by Raphael’s fresco, often adorned with stylized mythic animals. The dragon, in particular, was a benevolent deity, granting good luck and fair winds to the seagoing merchants, as symbolized by the puffs of wind steaming from its mouth. This is still one of the most popular patterns in Deruta and Fima’s Raffaellesco certainly is one of the best in town.
